Never open the basement door after dark
Never open the basement door after dark. My grandmother said it every single night. I opened it.
The stairs went down further than the house was tall.
At the bottom was a kitchen. Our kitchen. With the light on.
And at the table sat my grandmother, setting out two plates.
She looked up and said, you are late. The other one went upstairs an hour ago.
Upstairs, I could hear someone locking the basement door.
