A StoryShort alternative you can try for free

Story series on autopilot, with a free start and more places to post

Short answer: Yes, for most people starting out: TallyReel has a free plan, a $19 entry plan, more formats and 15 networks, where StoryShort starts at $39 a month. If you want AI ASMR, brainrot or UGC ad formats, or StoryShort's consistent-character story engine, StoryShort is the better fit.

Pick StoryShort if you make serialized fiction where the same characters must look and sound the same in every episode.

Pick TallyReel if you want to start free or for $19, and post to more than three apps.

StoryShort is a faceless story tool for TikTok and YouTube Shorts. You set a series up once, and it picks the next topic in your niche, writes it, plans the scenes, keeps characters looking the same, and posts to TikTok, YouTube and Instagram without you opening the app. It also offers long-form videos, AI ASMR, Italian brainrot and AI UGC ads.

TallyReel works the same way at its core: one idea becomes a script with a hook and planned shots, which you edit before anything renders, then voiceover, visuals, captions and music, then posting on a schedule. Where it differs is price at the bottom, the range of formats, the languages (31, with native Hindi and Urdu) and the number of networks it posts to (15). StoryShort prices on this page were checked on its pricing page on 2026-10-18.

Where StoryShort is better

  • Character consistency is its headline. StoryShort says it keeps your characters the same through a story, each with one voice, which suits drama and serialized fiction.
  • It has trend formats TallyReel doesn't: AI ASMR, Italian brainrot and AI UGC-style ads.
  • Its yearly prices are a deep discount, about 40% off list, so a committed creator pays about $23 a month for Starter.
  • The bigger plans are built for volume, up to about 330 thirty-second videos a month on Ultra across 4 series.

Where TallyReel is better

  • There is a free plan, and the paid entry plan is $19 a month, half StoryShort's monthly list price for Starter.
  • It schedules to 15 networks on every plan, not just TikTok, YouTube and Instagram, and you pick each post's time.
  • Long YouTube videos of 3 to 15 minutes come on the Pro plan, and Studio makes them on your own computer with no credits.
  • More formats from one tool: stick-figure and cartoon skits, comic stories, quizzes, promos and AI host videos.
  • Native Hindi and Urdu scripts and voices, plus 44 languages in all.

Pick StoryShort if

  • You make serialized fiction where the same characters must look and sound the same in every episode.
  • You want AI ASMR, brainrot or UGC ad formats, and you're ready to pay yearly.

Pick TallyReel if

  • You want to start free or for $19, and post to more than three apps.
  • You want skits, cartoons, quizzes, AI hosts or Hindi and Urdu videos, or you'd rather own Studio than rent.

What StoryShort and TallyReel cost

On 2026-10-18 StoryShort's pricing page showed four plans. Starter has a list price of $39 a month or $279 billed yearly (about $23 a month), with 400 credits, one series and roughly 26 thirty-second or 16 one-minute videos. Growth is $69 list or $499 a year, with 2 series. Influencer is $129 list or $899 a year, with 3 series. Ultra is $199 list or $1,399 a year, with 4 series. The page advertises 40% off for yearly billing, and every plan lists voiceovers, music, no watermark and auto-posting. We found no free plan.

TallyReel's free plan gives 300 free credits once, about 3 videos up to 30 seconds long with a small mark, and 10 scheduled posts a month. Starter is $19 a month for 4,000 credits, Plus is $39 for 10,000, and Pro is $79 for 22,000, where 100 credits are a minute of stock video. Yearly billing is $190, $390 and $790. Studio, opening 9 November, is a one-time $49 until 30 November and $149 after, with unlimited videos on your own computer.

Paid monthly, TallyReel Starter costs half of StoryShort Starter. Paid yearly, StoryShort Starter ($279) and TallyReel Starter ($190) are closer, and TallyReel gives more short videos for the money, longer videos and more networks. If you plan to make a lot, Studio once is less than a year of either.

Story quality: what to look for

Both tools write stories for you, and both will write a weak one sometimes. The thing that decides whether a story channel grows is the first two seconds and the payoff at the end. StoryShort leans on automation: it picks the next topic and posts without you opening the app. That saves time, but you see each video after it is made.

TallyReel shows you the script first, with the hook and the shot plan, and nothing renders until you approve. You can rewrite the hook, cut a slow scene or paste a story you wrote yourself. It takes a minute per video, and it is also the best way to keep a channel clear of YouTube's inauthentic content policy, which targets mass-produced, repetitive uploads.

Beyond story Shorts

StoryShort's extra formats are trend-driven: AI ASMR, Italian brainrot, UGC-style ads and short dramas. TallyReel's are aimed at different kinds of channels: stick-figure and cartoon skits for comedy, comic stories, quizzes and top 10 lists, promos for a business, and AI host videos with one or two lip-synced hosts (6 built in, or your own from a description or a drawn character). TallyReel also makes 16:9 YouTube videos of 3 to 15 minutes with chapters, which suits history, explainers and longer stories.

Where TallyReel falls short

TallyReel is in beta and newer than StoryShort. It doesn't make ASMR, brainrot or UGC ad formats, and it doesn't advertise StoryShort's consistent-character story engine. Cloud credits are monthly, cloud video length is capped by plan (30 seconds on Free, 3 minutes on Starter, 5 on Plus, 15 on Pro). Stock footage depends on what the libraries have, though TallyReel can make AI pictures instead. Studio needs an Apple silicon Mac or 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, and its installers aren't yet signed with paid certificates, so the first open asks you to confirm.
