The Valentine Written From a Tower
The oldest surviving valentine was written by a prisoner.
In 1415, a young French duke was captured at the Battle of Agincourt.
He was held in England for about twenty five years, far from his wife.
During that time he wrote her poems, and one calls her his very gentle valentine.
That poem still survives today, in the British Library in London.
So if you are writing a card this year, remember: someone once did it from a tower.
