The Basement Rule
My grandmother's house had one rule. Never open the basement door after dark.
I was twelve, it was summer, and everyone else was asleep.
I heard knocking from the other side. Three slow knocks, then nothing.
I whispered, hello? And something whispered hello back, in my voice.
I ran upstairs and woke my grandmother. She didn't look surprised.
She just said, you answered it, so now it knows your name. Part 2 tomorrow.
