The Night Before Eid
The night before Eid has a name. Chand raat, the night of the moon.
Someone spots the thin new moon, and the phones start buzzing.
The markets stay open late. Glass bangles clink in every stall.
Aunties and cousins sit in a row while mehndi dries on their hands.
At home, the kitchen is already busy with tomorrow's sheer khurma.
Nobody sleeps much. And in the morning, the whole family says Eid Mubarak.
